Integrating Spacial and Structural Design

The Royal Liver Building was built as a new head office for the Royal Liver Assurance Limited Group. The main aims of the project where to create a building that was:

  • open plan
  • bright
  • comfortable
  • had big board / meeting rooms

It was also built as an investment, with the company only occupying 2 of the 13 floors.

The Royal Liver Building is very classical on the exterior but very modern on the inside. Each floor and rooms are very bright, with lightly painted walls to allow the light to bounce around. The interior also has some classical elements, such as ceiling design features.
The building is essentially 2 square structures each with a tower. In the centre of each square is a light well.

This is basically a straight opening used to allow light to enter the building. This greatly decreases the need for artificial lighting, and with almost all the interior walls being white and the entire interior of the light wells being glass windows, the inside of the building is very bright.
The Royal Liver Building is a very open plan building. The ground floor office and board rooms are large. The space is used very well, however there are quite a lot of columns in the big open planned rooms.

The large board room would be perfect for any company to hold their meetings. There is also a lovely view of the city from the large arched window.

From this rooftop picture you can see that there are a lot of ventilation systems that run throughout the Royal Liver Building. This would be costing a significant amount for the owners of the building. Also from here you get a good view of the light wells, how the towers are accessed, and also a beautiful view of the city.
